ARTIST BIO

Sarah Shinhyo Kim is a Korean-American contemporary artist based in New York. Born in South Korea, she spent her formative years living throughout Asia—including Thailand, the Philippines, Taiwan, and Singapore—before settling in the United States. Her multicultural experiences continue to influence her artistic perspective and inspire her exploration of human connection, emotion, and communication.
Kim studied Fine Arts at Cornell University and Fashion Design at Parsons School of Design. Her work explores the complexities of modern relationships, identity, and emotional expression through a distinctive visual language that combines contemporary symbolism, playful imagery, and universal themes.
Kim has presented three solo exhibitions and participated in numerous group exhibitions and art fairs in the United States and internationally. Her work has been exhibited in New York, Paris, and South Korea, and featured at events including the Affordable Art Fair New York and Artexpo New York. Through her evolving body of work, Kim invites viewers to reflect on the emotions and experiences that connect us across cultures, generations, and communities.

Dive into My Portfolio
Artist Statement
My work investigates the complexities of human connection, emotion, and communication. I am interested in the ways individuals navigate relationships, construct identity, and seek understanding in an increasingly interconnected world. Through painting and mixed media, I explore both the universality of human experience and the subtle emotional nuances that distinguish us from one another.
Much of my recent work has drawn upon the visual language of emojis and other contemporary symbols as a point of departure. I am fascinated by how simplified forms can carry profound emotional weight, functioning as modern hieroglyphs that transcend linguistic and cultural boundaries. By transforming these familiar symbols into layered visual compositions, I examine the tension between individual expression and collective experience.
Recurring themes throughout my practice include empathy, vulnerability, belonging, isolation, and the search for meaningful connection. Individual forms often accumulate, overlap, and merge into larger structures, reflecting the ways personal narratives intersect within families, communities, and society at large. These compositions suggest that identity is not fixed or singular, but shaped through an ongoing dialogue between self and others.
While contemporary symbols have informed much of my recent work, they represent only one aspect of a broader inquiry into the emotional landscape of the human condition. My practice continues to evolve through the exploration of new visual languages, forms, and materials that communicate the complexities of human experience. Rather than depicting specific stories, I seek to create spaces for reflection—inviting viewers to recognize fragments of their own emotions, relationships, and memories within the work.
Ultimately, my work is an exploration of what connects us: the shared emotions, vulnerabilities, and experiences that persist across cultures, generations, and circumstances. Through this ongoing investigation, I hope to foster moments of recognition, empathy, and human connection.
